Greendale Garden Cemetery stands apart as Sydney’s sole dedicated natural burial grounds, setting a new standard in the region. Unlike others that are typically incorporated within existing cemeteries, our cemetery pioneers a unique approach, blending traditional lawn burials with natural burial philosophies. This innovative combination not only minimises the environmental impact of burials but also ensures that loved ones can directly visit the gravesite, fostering a deeper connection and sense of peace.
We offer natural green burial plots, and ash burials. Our cemetery is dedicated to natural and sustainable treatment of the natural surroundings.
The body is not embalmed and treated only with natural mortuary care and is shrouded within a biodegradable coffin/casket made of timber, wicker, bamboo, biodegradable cardboard or a shroud.
A shroud or clothing if worn, is made of natural fibres, not polyester etc. The optimum material is made of natural, protein-based fibres. Organic plant-based fibres such as hemp, linen and cotton are also acceptable.
The grave has a simple plaque marker or stone, rather than a large headstone (Greendale Garden cemetery has a specific guide for grave markers).
